Cal-Organic Farms grows 5 types of herbs that deliver great taste

The creative side of meal preparation often involves the use of herbs and spices to enhance the flavors present in main ingredients. Cal-Organic Farms® offers five different herbs that give you the opportunity to mix and match with your favorite dishes for delicious results.

The leafy portion of herbs are the most commonly used part of the plant in cooking, although virtually any part technically can find its way into the meal preparation process. Other plant parts, including seeds, roots and buds, typically end up as spices rather than the leafy herbs we’ll talk about here.

Here is a quick rundown of the mouth-watering herbs that Cal-Organic Farms® makes available to grocers across North America:

Cilantro – The small, lacey leaves of cilantro plants are favorites for salad lovers. Chopped cilantro is a great addition to guacamole or pesto, and those attractive leaves make for an appealing garnish. Cilantro has virtually no calories, is low in sodium, and provides 10 percent of the daily value of potassium.

Curly Parsley – This herb can stand on its own as an ingredient by virtue of its firm stems and tight, bunched leaves. Its slightly bitter taste makes it one of the more common garnish choices as a mouth-watering green color offset from a main ingredient. Curley Parsley (also known as plain parsley) is relatively high in iron (30% daily value) and is a good source of vitamin C.

Italian Parsley – This variety of parsley features a more robust, peppery flavor than its curly cousin, and maintains its flavor profile well during cooking. Italian Parsley also works well in salads and as a garnish to brighten up many types of dishes. It is rich in vitamin K and like Curly Parsley, provides 30% daily value in iron.

Dill – This herb is popular in vegetable dips, seafood dishes and of course dill pickles. Its strong, fresh flavor provides the power needed to serve as more than simply a garnish. It is a powerhouse of flavor unto itself. Dill is rich in vitamins A and C, and delivers 30% daily value in iron.

Fennel – This herb may not be as well-known as some of the other herb varieties we offer, but it may be the most versatile. Every part of the fennel plant is edible from the white, crunchy bulb to the dark green, feathery leaves. Fennel has a slight licorice quality to its taste and its high water content makes it prone to freezing, so take care not to let it get too cold when you store it.
